Most depressing books that are NOT about historical events?
I've been looking for sad books and browsing through this subreddit for a while, but most recommendations I can find are related to war or some historical event.
What are some depressing books I can read that are entirely fictional?
Pachinko happens during ww2 but I wouldn’t say it revolves around it.

Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez. Told from multiple POVs about residents in a poor suburb in Ontario. Really poignant reminder that minority and disenfranchised children continue to slip through the cracks, even in Canada.
Less Than by AD Long. It’s about the ongoing toxic drug crisis and follows a fictional character through his experience of being being addicted/homeless.
Bewilderment by Richard Powers. This one broke my heart. A father tries to help his sensitive son make sense of a world that doesn’t make sense, and doesn’t make space for those of us who don’t fit neatly into the “normal” box.
