So I recently returned to reading after falling out of it. I read all the time as a kid and just kinda stopped, but got back into it as an adult and am loving it! I love horror/generally dark stories that ultimately do have a hopeful outlook by the end of the story, and I love good character work, so I felt like starting with Stephen King was a good idea, and it has been as I've now read 15 of his books and have absolutely loved them all! (Some more than others of course)

What are some other books/authors I should check out?

Anything by Dean Koontz. I always enjoyed his work more than Stephen King’s.

ETA: some of my personal favorites are The Door to December, The Taking, and Strangers.

    2. Not horror but equally character-driven… might try anything from Don Winslow (the Border trilogy, Kings of Cool)

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. It’s about killer mermaids

Peyton Place by Grace Metalious might work, it was a big influence on King, especially early on. It’s like Salem’s Lot minus the vampires, an in-depth look at the ugliness that can occur in a small New England town.

Clive Barker is a natural next step. Try the Books of Blood to see if he’s your style.
