I’m about half way through the original twelve Bond novels written by Fleming and although I’m enjoying them for the most part, I was just curious if they are regarded as quality fiction or if they are just riding on the coat tails of the movies. They all seem like pretty straight forward spy thrillers. They lack the over the top elements of the movies and are even kind of dry at points. But at the same time they have passages that are pulpy and risque, even bordering on trashy. There’s also enough casual racism and sexism to make David Duke blush. I’m going to continue reading them as they’re still interesting and enjoyable to read for what they are. But I just wanted to know, are they considered to be quality literature or dime store trash?
