Basically this, kind of like Avatar the Last Airbender. He had to travel to learn to bend the different elements so he could defeat the Firelord and save the world. The suggestions don't have to have the same high stakes, just the travel, the unique teachers, and learning moments.

Taran Wanderer by Lloyd Alexander. It’s YA and part of a series, but I’d happy read it again as an adult and, as I recall, it functions very well as a stand alone novel.
