The Diviners is great if you are okay with historical fantasy (and YA). The Painted Veil is good as well if you want something more serious in tone.

Bernard Cornwell has written a number of different series, set in various time periods. I’ve read the Sharpe series, which is good.

Kevin Crossley-Holland wrote the Arthur series, set in the middle ages and following the young son of a minor noble in the Welsh / English borders.

Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff is set in Roman Britain, and is worth a read.
