    1. Not sure specifically what appeals to you about the Grafton books, but here are some with my reasoning.

      The Inspector Wexford books by Ruth Rendell strike me as similar in that they are middleweight mysteries with an engaging main character, not as meaty as Jo Nesbo or James Elroy but also not cozy mysteries or straight-up silly mysteries like Janet Evanovich.

      The VI Warshawski books by Sara Paretsky are on the meatier side of middleweight, with a good main character, though the stories can get repetitive after a certain point.

      The Mary Russell series by Laurie King is a continuation of the Sherlock Holmes character from the POV of a female apprentice. I’d rank them as middleweight, but very different in feel from the Kinsey Millhones I read (I think I read through H) because they’re 1920s period pieces with a lot of travel and exploration.
