Genre preferably literary fiction. Someone of the similar significance to these countries as Faulkner and Steinbeck for the US, or Joyce, Wilde and Beckett for Ireland.

Cloudstreet by Tim Winton. I am an American and this is one of my favorite books. More contemporary than the writers you mention (he is very much alive and still writing novels) but my understanding is that this book is taught in schools in Australia. Any Australians can correct me if I’m wrong!

    2. Some New Zealand authors: Alan Duff, Janet Frame, Ngaio Marsh, Katherine Mansfield, Barry Crump, C.K. Stead, Patricia Grace, Witi Ihimaera.

I wouldn’t compare some to Faulkner (such as Barry Crump), but they’re authors of classic works none the less. If you’re willing to stray into young adult territory, Margaret Mahy and Maurice Gee are two names that immediately come to mind.
