2024 has been an emotional rollercoaster of a year for me, in the past few months I've gotten married and lost my mom a few weeks before our wedding.
For my mental and emotional health, I've started to read again as it provides a place to escape and feel comfortable. My family and I are Japanese and I'd love to read a book that starts to help me work through my grief and still feel close to my roots.
I recently just finished "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" and while I cried a bit, I did enjoy the book and it's currently one of my favorites for the year.
Please suggest me a book 🙂

While grief is not the main focus of the book, Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa is pretty similar to the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series in terms of vibes and is very touching and hopeful. Sending hugs! 🫂

The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World: A Novel
Novel by Laura Imai Messina
She isn’t Japanese, but the book takes place in Japan and she lived in Japan for several years. The entire plot is about grief. A phenomenal book!
Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner is by a Korean-American woman, which I know isn’t the same as Japanese, but it’s about the grief of a woman who married her husband a few months before her mom died and the complicated relationship with grief she dealt with. I thought it was really beautiful and raw and touching.
