I'm primarily looking for books with gods as main characters, but side characters are fine, too. I'm not looking for books where the gods' identities are taken directly from mythology (no Percy Jackson!), I'm specifically looking for stories where the god characters are the author's own creation (I don't know if The Tarot Sequence by K.D. Edwards counts as gods, but I love that series. I really enjoyed Heaven Official's Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu as well).

Absolutely any non-mythological books featuring gods as important characters to the story are welcome. Stories leaning into the religious aspects or how divinity affects the god would be especially appreciated! I'm really struggling to find things where gods are expressed to at least not be completely separate from mortals.

Terry Pratchett’s *Small Gods*, maybe? The Great God Om, incarnated as a tortoise, is a major character.

And even though the gods in Neil Gaiman’s *American Gods* and *Anansi Boys* are based on gods from various mythologies, they’re not doing the sorts of things gods do in mythology – they’re getting by in late 20th and early 21st century America.
