Classic literature in the public domain that is both easy to read and not about dark subjects?
Out of the classic literature that is public domain (what you can find on Gutenberg.org), what are some books that aren’t too difficult to read and also don’t involve intense subjects like war, slavery, etc?
Jeeves and Wooster stories by P. G. Wodehouse are great fun.
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome has similar humor to Wodehouse.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. Some of her other books are also in the public domain.
Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I believe all the novels and short stories are in the public domain by now.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. Verne’s novels are usually filled with fun and adventure.

There’s quite a bit of classic children’s literature in the public domain which tends to be easier to read but some of it does deal with serious subjects:
Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
And, if you want a very easy, lovely read all of the Winnie the Pooh books by A. A. Milne are in the public domain.
