I’m interested in books like James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I mean books that describe how a person came to be an artist and developed and matured. By artist it could be musician or filmmakers or whatever, though I prefer writer. On Wiki I see that this kind of book is called Künstlerroman, though that’s not necessarily a book that has autobiographical elements. I mean it could be fictional I suppose. And Joyce’s book is fiction but only partly so. That’s what makes it more effective I think. Any suggestions for similar books?

One of my favorite books is Martin Eden by Jack London. It’s from 1909 and I just looked it up and it’s exactly this genre. (Which I had never heard of, so thank you and the Germans!)
