Suggest a “deep” book

I'm a non-native english speaker and I was not really into reading English literature other than textbooks. Recently i wanted to give it a go . I wanted to read something which has good phrases in it , words that makes you think type . I read Edgar Allan Poe The Masque of the Red Death and liked it . Next by friends recommendation I picked up "the waves " by Virginia Woolf , I liked it but it's been a slow read .

So suggest me something along that line , preferably which feels a little modern bu writing but still has some depth to it .
