In school, can't remember what grade but maybe middle school?? We were required to read specific books. Ya know…like Hatchet, To Kill a Mockingbird, ect.
But there was one….I can't remember the name of. I read it enough to remember most of it, but many of the names escape me.
I think it was set in Columbia? Or maybe Cambodia? About a pair of sisters who were betrothed to a pair of brothers. The girls were happy with their matches, and the wedding for the eldest two was fast approaching. But something happened, and the eldest brother passed away. To keep traditions and the wedding, they ended up betrothing the elder sister to the younger brother instead. This caused the younger sister to be really upset. She ends up betrothed to some older guy, a not-ideal match. But her mother said since she wasn't umm….a woman yet….wasn't "ripe for children"….they would wait until she came into that before setting the wedding date. So when she finally came into it, she did her best to hide it.
I don't remember much of what happens after that point. I think the main character's name was Sundara? Maybe something along those lines? Does anyone know the title?? Sound familiar at all?
