I'm looking for books that go into the technical details of a war campaign, plotting a battle, contain plotting table discussions and things of the sort. I'd prefer historical fiction books that had:

    • A character plot (isn't just a technical historical account, it actually goes into the story)

    • Interesting battle and focus on how it was planned, what other plans were thought of, basically a focus on war plotting table discussions

    • preferably ancient. Roman/Persian empire /Alexander the great/Genghis Khan. Preferably before gun powder, but if you know of one about a modern battle that's particularly interesting then I'd like to hear about it. No 20th century or later though.

    • preferably deals with the psychology/thoughts of the commandants (not necessarily the head of the army, but someone with more power than foot soldiers). It's okay if it doesn't though
