I recently really enjoyed the movie Love Lies Bleeding and am looking for a book that scratches that same itch. I’ve read a lot of classic noir (from James M. Cain to Elmore Leonard) and a lot of Flannery O’Connor and such, and I guess I’m looking for something with the same noir feel and the same kind of dark comedy but more contemporary. Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell is another good example. Obviously Love Lies Bleeding has sapphic themes but that’s not important to me. I do like noir stories that give the women more to do than your typical femme fatale.
No YA, please, even the YA you think is the exception to the rule.
