The first thing that comes to mind is ASOIAF, but perhaps some clarification is in order. I'm interested in a book or series where the clear protagonist (or one of the significant protagonists) is primarily experienced by the reader through hearsay, people telling of their deeds, not directly witnessing them, etc. Think Brian in Life of Brian; Jesus's story is going on in the background. There are probably other examples, just can't think of them.
