Slaughterhouse 5 seems pretty unique in that Vonnegut experienced the Dresden bombing first-hand, then revisited it through genre fiction, specifically sci-fi.
I’m struggling to think of other examples of authors having first-hand experience of a traumatic world event and then exploring it through a radical reimagining. Any tips or pointers?

Tim O’Brien’s ‘The Things We Carried’ would maybe fit. It’s not as genre fiction-y as Slaughterhouse 5, but it’s definitely not a straightforward account.
Also Stephen Wright, which may be an even closer match, but I haven’t actually read his work so much as I am just vaguely aware of it, so I can’t be certain.
