(English is not my native language, so please excuse any mistakes). I'm looking for books that have a main character who is considered incredibly cool by those around him. They think of him as incredibly strong, smart, and noble. This character is not like that, but he's not a jerk either. He's good, but not as good as those around him think. (The character can be either gender.)

If you like sci-fi, I can recommend the Ciaphas Cain books by Sandy Mitchell. The omnibus called Hero of the Imperium is really nice and has 3 short stories and 3 novels, so it should keep you reading for a while.
He’s basically an accidental war hero. He’s a total coward and just wants a cushy job away from the front lines, but in his cowardice and while running away from trouble, he keeps discovering enemy plots, secret ambushes, and stuff like that. Everyone thinks he’s amazing, he keeps getting promoted and sent to even more dangerous places, and he hates it so much.
Edit: Just to clarify, he’s not a bad guy. He’s smart, nice, and good at his job. He won’t abandon people in danger, but he’ll save them while screaming like a little girl and complaining the whole time. He just tries really, really hard to avoid danger in the first place and considered himself a coward. Definitely not a jerk.
