If you’re open to middle grade fantasy, my favorite series is [Nevermoor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/6a6d5ca1-b2f5-47be-828c-018144d3bbc7) by Jessica Townsend!

And if you’re open to very long books, my other favorite is [The Hands of the Emperor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/af2bba9c-8f41-4a3e-b87a-8532a44ccb67) by Victoria Goddard. It’s a beautifully written slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships.

And if you want something with more fairy tale vibes, I recommend [The Goose Girl](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/2d9d85b9-6993-4ce7-8436-7383a2677eb5) by Shannon Hale, which is based on the Brother’s Grimm fairy tale by the same name.

Cornelia Funke (of Inkheart fame) wrote a YA novelization of del Toro’s movie Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s very good.

Another German YA novel is Mimus by Lilli Thal. I could only find this book used online, from Book Warehouse or someplace like that. It’s about a prince who is captured and forced to be a court jester by his father’s enemies.

It has been years since I read this, but Jennifer Donnelly’s Beauty and the Beast: Lost in a Book had me gripped.

Susanna Clarke’s short story collection The Ladies of Grace Adieu is unparalleled.
