I'm looking for a horror book where the horror is not cliche. But almost….unintentional. And possibly one where the storyline doesn't feel stereotypically Hollywood.

Like in The Shining (spoiler warning), it is first described how Danny spills beer on his Dad's play. Later on it is revealed that Tony leads Danny to the play.

Horror point #1: Was Tony deliberately trying to get Danny hurt by luring him to the play? Did he plan the spilling?

It is then revealed that his Dad never knew where the play was, but Danny did. Now the horror elevates. Who really is Tony? How did he know? Or was there some magical link in the play itself?

It is the way the writer introduces these events is what creates the horror. I felt like this book started off like that….but towards the end it got very Hollywood.

What are some books like this? Where it's subtle and eerie, and doesn't feel like cliche horror? I'm also a big fan of aliens! So any alien books are welcome.
