I’m 14 and I was wondering on what book I should read next. I’m a fan of science and monsters, so I was considering reading these two. About Jurassic Park, I’ve always loved dinosaurs and I have a lot of knowledge about them. That being said, I’m also a bit philosophical and am interested in some of the themes in Frankenstein such as the nature of humanity. Which one do you think is better for me to read?

I mean definitely read them both. But start with Frankenstein. You can never go wrong with the classics. There is a reason it’s been in publication for over a century

Definitely should read both, but I also suggest starting with Frankenstein. I’m biased since it’s one of my favorites though.

    3. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is not the same as the Boris Karloff version. Its a great read considering that Mary Shelley was only 18 when she wrote it.

I have never read Jurassic Park.

I would consider Jurassic Park a more fun, fast paced romp with some math exploration and Frankenstein a more slower paced and philosophical book delving into the ethics of science and progress. Let your mood guide you 😊

    5. Yes to both. JP the book is a more complex story than the movie, so it might also scratch a few philosophical itches for you.

Jurassic Park was my favorite when I was young. I credit it with starting my love of reading. So that would be my pick.

    7. I haven’t read Jurassic Park yet, but Frankenstein is one of my favourite books of all time! That said, I absolutely would’ve struggled to read it at 14. Not saying you’ll have any trouble understanding it or anything like that, just that for me, it took some time to get used to the writing style and I remember having to reread some passages over and over again in the beginning. So if you feel the same way at first, don’t get discouraged!

    8. Reading Jurassic Park at your age lead to me reading pretty much everything Crichton wrote.

      And it was pretty great

Frankenstein is straight goofy. The monster is out crossing the tundra on a dogsled. I’m not even kidding.

Both are classics worth reading so I’m going to go with both. Reading all the books is the way.

If you’d like something modern, I suggest The Girl With All The Gifts by M R Carey in place of Frankenstein as there is similar theming at play.

I suggest Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky in place of Jurassic Park as there is similar theming at play.

      Enjoy! 🙂

I read Frankenstein (the Mary Shelley version in the original 1818 text specifically) for the first time when I was 12. And I absolutely loved it. It’s my favorite book of all time. I can’t recommend it enough. So I would suggest starting with Frankenstein!

Both. If you can only choose one I’d go with Frankenstein then get my hands on Jurassic
