I’m currently starting the third book in my fantasy series. At the end of the second, there’s a sort of darkest hour moment and my MC sustains a pretty serious injury to his fighting arm. It’s a magic/poison enhanced wound so it’s pretty difficult to heal, even with magic.

Part of me is thinking of making this into a growing opportunity for the MC. He’s a little arrogant and has always been better at sword fighting than magic, but maybe this is an injury he could struggle with through most of the book. I was thinking this may be a good opportunity to have him grow as a character and rely more on magic than on his sword.

The only reason I’m hesitant to go this route is because this is a trope that has been done quite a bit: Luke getting his hand cut off, Frodo getting stabbed by the Ringwraith, Eragon getting his back stabbed by the shade. Is this trope so overdone that I should take this injury in a different direction, or is there still room to tell this part of the story in an interesting light?
