    1. I don’t know if this is to geographically narrow, but Intimate Strangers: The History of Jews and Catholics in the City of Rome. The Holocaust plays a center part in the second half.

    2. Not sure if you have a preference for time periods, but *God’s Crucible: Islam and the Making of Europe, 570-1215* by David Levering Lewis is an excellent exploration of religion and politics in early medieval Europe.

    3. War is not unlike religion, but very mythlike. It’s an unnerving book, but *War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning* by Christopher Hedges.
