    So, the first book was pretty good. That's it. Pretty good. Not great, not amazing, and absolutely nowhere near the hype it got. Considering it isn't YA, I allowed myself to hope the hype would not be overblown, but alas.

    I'm going to specifically take a shot at the interludes. They were clunky, unnecessary dams in the flow of the story. Every time something interesting seems to be happening, BAM, interlude. Not even a shift to a different POV, just a clunky interlude.

    Fans of the first book have told me it was unnecessary to turn this into a series – that it should've been a standalone. While I agree it works as one, the problems I had with the book aren't quite big enough to put me off reading the rest, provided it's at least as good, though preferably better, than the first.

    Without spoilers, if at all possible, in what ways does the series improve or worsen?
