I’ve been getting the itch to expand my horizons. I’m open to pretty much anything, but ideally not Dune or Harry Potter since every single person I know irl has started there (they’re on my tbr!). Basically, what’s a fiction book you would recommend to someone trying to get into fiction?
If it’s relevant, I’m a guy.

Any book by Erik Larson is a good place to start. Devil in the White City, maybe or Thunderstruck might be good to start?
A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge.
Recursion by Blake Crouch.
Do you like any fictional TV? What genres/shows?
What kind of nonfiction subjects do you like?
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
The Art of Fielding (Chad Harbach)
