i.e. even if the roles of the antagonists’ and protagonists’ were switched, it would still read well.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes by Yoshiki Tanaka. Two guys on different sides of a war repeatedly come into conflict with each other as they rise up the ranks of their respective sides. Neither is an inherently evil person, they’re separated by their sides and circumstances and later their actions. It’s a space opera, but very readable and easy to keep up with. Very nuanced story.

    2. **The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman**
A lighthouse keeper and his wife make a devastating decision. Both protagonists and antagonists are deeply flawed yet profoundly human.

**The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini**
Set against the backdrop of tumultuous events; showcases complex characters, none of whom are purely villains.
