Hi, so a bit of background – my sister and I are both avid readers and we live on opposite sides of the country, so this year we decided to send each other curated book boxes for the holidays. Essentially you pick a book and buy items to go in the box that represent the theme of the book. I almost exclusively read horror, which my sister doesn’t like at all, so I’m having trouble finding a good book for her. Ideally I’m looking for something set in the Victorian era, but not actually written during that time period, a romance or mystery (or combination of both) would be exactly what I’m looking for. I’ve done a bit of searching already and most of what I’ve found are those corny erotic books, I definitely don’t want to gift her that. Any recommendations would be very appreciated, thanks so much!!

*The secret service of tea and treason* by India Holton. It’s the third in a series, but I have read it as a standalone. Two rival secret service agents from Victorian England have to go undercover as a married pirate couple to save the Queen. Very funny, easy to read, a bit chaotic.
Maybe you’d like to look into:
**Wuthering Heights** by Emily Bronte
**Jane Eyre** by Charlotte Bronte
**The Woman in White** by Wilkie Collins
Gone with the Wind
Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell
The Lady Sherlock series. Interesting take on the original series.
{{The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley}}
I think it’s Edwardian but Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn fits the bill.
If you don’t mind young adult fiction then The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman.
If you don’t mind light fantasy and a *little* bit of spookiness, A Great and Terrible Beauty is really good.
A number of Sarah Waters books are set in the Victorian era and they’re wonderful
Kaite Welsh has a wonderful murder mystery series (2 books so far) with a tiny hint of romance
