I've been a fan of poetry for a long, long time, but I never got around to reading Spoon River Anthology. In fact, I didn't even know what it was about.

For those unaware, it's a collection of poems (looks like a couple hundred or so) that are basically dead folks eulogizing themselves, revealing their innermost secrets, desires, and regrets. Each of the people is from the same village, and the poems intertwine. I was hooked after I read the framing poem that sets up five men and five women as "main characters."

It's funny because I've been wanting to write something very much like this, only in the style of Edward Gorey (setting up a creepy village with intertwining verses about its living relatives) so this is going to be pretty helpful.

The references are a bit opaque as first, but man is this epic! Has anyone else read this book?
