I‘m just getting into reading again and it helps me calm down in order to get to sleep quicker. I‘m looking for some thrilling books with a good story, interesting characters and maybe some action. A real page turner. I don‘t really care if it‘s science fiction, fantasy, a spy novel etc.
Online there are so many recommendations that I don‘t really know what to choose. Do you guys have any recommendations that (loosely) fit my description?

For action, try James Rollins or Steve Berry. Both authors have heavy historical/scientific elements in their books.

For fantasy… I’m not comfortable recommending fan favorites like GoT or the Kingkiller Chronicles because those series aren’t finished and may never be. If you want something that’s just straight up swords & magic, you could check out DnD novels like the Icewind Dale trilogy or the Dragonlance Chronicles. The Shannara series by Terry Brooks is good, but the first book (Sword of Shannara) is very very very similar to The Lord of the Rings. I feel like it’s safe to skip it and go straight to The Elfstones of Shannara.

A YA series that I loved over the summer is the Grishaverse novels. The first 3 are “good” but pretty standard YA fare. Starting with book 4 (Six of Crows) the series goes from “good” to “great”.

For sci-fi, I’ll always shill for the Humanx Commonwealth series by Alan Dean Foster. Nothing too heavy. Just good old space adventure.

If you don’t mind something a bit darker, the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz or something by Grady Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism).

    2. Want people battling a war against giant monsters by fighting inside giant telepathicaly controlled mecha monsters? How about that plus a badass woman protagonist who is expected to roll over and die for the cause, but who…has other plans. It’s weird and fun and crazy! Definitely has action.

Iron Widow, by Xiran Jay Zhou.
