Hey everyone, so basically my dad is in treatment for alcoholism. My siblings and I are looking for something we can read and discuss with him (he used to read all sorts of things to us when we were little) so we can stay engaged with him and have an excuse to visit where he won’t feel like a burden. I’m looking for books that touch on themes of substance abuse and/or self improvement without being too on the nose. Better if it’s something in the fantasy/sci-fi vein since it will be an easier sell. He loves Tolkien, King, Le Guin, and at least some Asimov, but I’m having a hard time coming up with something in the same style that would be helpful. Thank you all in advance for any suggestions!

    1. Maybe irrelevant, but I feel like the men of *Lonesome Dove* by Larry McMurtry start the book killing time in this hazy limbo place but overcome the inertia of that sketchy life to start a grand adventure in their full maturity. Maybe there’s a helpful metaphor.
