I just got three books from my uncles new house (the books were left by previous owners) and they all have this light greenish shade in the upper part of the pages which can be seen when the book is closed. The books don’t look like they have mold in them. (Like no spots, the books are in good condition and the pages are seemingly clean when book is opened) I can’t unfortunately add pictures in this post. Anyway does anyone have any idea what could it be?

    1. When the edges of pages are colored deliberately, that is usually done to account for the likelihood of the pages yellowing over time. Most low quality paper will turn yellow-to-brown over time, so some publishers would (as it is not so common these days) dye the edge of the paper something like green so that you wouldn’t be able to see the yellow-brown from the outside of the book.
