This book is astounding and of a historical and literary niche none of my friends can relate to. I NEED someone to talk to about this incredible book.
Flanagan’s writing is astounding, absolutely one of the best historical novels I’ve read, and I am not normally a fan of the genre. It absolutely comes alive. The scene of the French first arriving in Mayo and dispatching the local dumb yeomanry in 10 minutes after the reader has spent 150+ pages resenting their cruelty and idiocy—it does not get any better than that. This is the scene where I first said Flanagan is a genius. Pitch perfect writing. I’d be challenged to think of another scene in a historical novel, besides W+P, set up so well. Just so so good.
Anyone?
