Hi everyone, I suffer daily from severe anxiety centering around a fear of suffocation. One of the ways I cope is to read fiction. I find myself returning to books I read in my childhood, such as the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, the Chronicles of Narnia, Nancy Drew and books by Enid Blyton. These books give me comfort by reminding me of simpler times.

I would like to expand my reading list but I have a fear of winding up with a book that has a storyline that would cause me anxiety. I cannot handle books with intense and suspenseful storylines(such as romance novels where the villain gets the guy for most of the story) or books with apocalyptic themes(such as zombie apocalypse or wars) as that will trigger my anxiety.

Could someone recommend a book that has a theme around pleasant childhood experiences and that would be calming for a hyper-anxious mind?

Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday or Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

Get to the root of the triggers causing the anxiety instead of running from them. Finding milquetoast comfort reads won’t help. You’re missing out some great books. Tension and conflict are keys of good writing.
