(the setting can either be fictional or not)
I’d love a good detective story set in a seedy, sorta slummy city. bonus points if the setting is downright dystopic.
The City and the City by China Mieville is the story of a city split in two politically (loosely based on how Berlin was divided). There is no wall, only strictly enforced law that each side has to fully ignore the existence of the other. When a dead body from one side is dumped into the other, a police detective has to do some creative investigation. The mystery is interesting but not really the theme of the book—it is exploring identity, questioning, freedom.
