This is going to sound extremely stupid but it is what it is. I have a really hard time counting light and happy reads as real books.

I don’t how and when I got the idea that for a book to count as progress it has to have some kind of heavy theme/sad ending/thought provoking/ heartache inducing. This often discourages me from picking light hearted books too. I am only ever attracted to something heavy.

Please convince me out of this.

What is the purpose of a book? For some, it is to entertain. For me, it is to edify, and the entertainment value of a book of merely to make it effective in that edification, since it is unpleasant to read a boring book. Edification has all kinds of forms, and can be subtle; but if it makes you think, makes you learn, inspires you, gives you hope, gives you courage, gives you wisdom, gives you facts, expands your imagination, makes you feel deep things, or gives you practical things for the real world—any of these is edification.

Happy books and light-hearted books are just as effective at edifying as unhappy ones. Therefore, by my reckoning, they are worthwhile.
