Where it says that the average reading speed is 300 wpm.
I’m a reasonably intelligent person and very used to reading. Doing the reading test I read at 208 words per minute, and I don’t see how anyone could read faster than that while actually understanding what is being said. Google says the average speed is 250 wpm. I can read faster if I don’t subvocalize, but I couldn’t maintain that for any long stretch of time, and above that I don’t see how the story would flow well and be enjoyable. This is reading a text in a novel. Reading more difficult philosophical material would be a LOT slower.
Do you people actually read this fast? Mind you, this is not a question of pride or self-esteem on my part (on that account, I couldn’t care less), moreso a question of efficiency – too many books, too little time.
