So I only recently got back into reading again after neglecting it since I was a kid and got into another slump before I started Sword of Kaigen. It totally took me out of it: It was fast paced, beautiful and devastatingly sad all at the same time, and the fight scenes were easily the most thrilling and creative that i’ve read in my entire life. I don’t know how to describe it other than it feels like over the top anime scenes in written form. If you suspend your disbelief, it’s just so cool.
Now here’s the thing: I know how much I loved it is probably due to the fact that i’m a reading ametuer and haven’t gone through many books. Someone once described this book as beautifully clumsy, and i can’t help but to agree. There were certain parts of the book where i was like “ohhh this is teetering on being cringe” or “why is this here!!” and the ending was ultimately unsatisfying considering it’s a standalone. But this book, in all of its ridiculousness, had me gasping out loud in excitement with its action and unexpected character moments. ive never really experienced that in a book before, never even knew i was an action person, and i’m chasing that high.
I’m looking for a book that’s just as thrilling, but with a little less mistakes and info-dumping. None of these are a requirement but for context I love the powers, the fact it was written by a WOC with a fmc (also even a sliver of queerness being referenced in a positive way makes me happy, im weak.), the creative action, and the character moments (even though i could certaintly go for more!). Also, the worldbuilding and prose wasn’t too high fantasy/subtle to where i’m constantly confused. Any suggestions??
