Elegant Universe, Professor Brian Greene; beginner’s in the sense he explains it all, assuming you don’t know much about astrophysics – but not in any way an ‘astrophysics for dummies’ – ie you need to be well-read beforehand and able to tackle some quite difficult concepts. But he writes beautifully though, I found it accessible and I don’t know a lot [well almost nil] about mathematics.

I second Brian Greene.
You can also start with a classic – A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking.
