Maybe Infinite Jest works because it makes the reader feel so smart, entertained, and cool that they share it to get a ego boost.
Thus the book tames and uses the flawed American traits that are talked about it the book.
Would that be the ultimate flex?
Writing a book that criticizes the very action that makes the book popular, yet it still becomes popular.

I just loved it because it appealed to my inner OCD and everlasting fascination with addiction.
I recommended it at work this week because it amused me that we also work with annular optics as well as optics for nuclear fusion. When I admitted it was depressing, no one wanted to read it.
