Looking for a ghost story that’s not too scary. Maybe we know they’re ghosts, maybe it’s a twist. Maybe the protagonist is a ghost or maybe she’s being haunted. Or befriended. A little eerie atmosphere is fine. Some mystery. But unfortunately, I’m a chicken, so nothing that’s going to make the hair on my neck stand up or make me want to sleep with the lights on. Just something a little tantalizingly otherworldly, something a little off. To be honest, it doesn’t even have to be ghosts/spirits. Just that vibe.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver is a good ghost story that is also a mystery and not that scary.
goosebumps are pretty good
I think Night Film by Marisha Pessl would be perfect. Its more of a mystery/thriller but there’s an underlying tone of ‘something is very wrong here’ and it keeps you wondering throughout the entire book whether or not something paranormal is going on.
I think Simone St James does a great job of writing ghostly books that aren’t too scary! Maybe try The Broken Girls or The Book of Cold Cases?
I recommend *A House With Good Bones* by T. Kingfisher. It is technically a horror novel set in a haunted house, but it also has a cozy vibe and a light-hearted tone. I’m scared of real horror, too, and I could handle it, so I think it might be what you are looking for. 🙂
Oh, and maybe also the *Chrestomanci* series by Diana Wynne Jones (beginning with *Charmed Life*). It’s scary in the way a Harry Potter book is scary (if that comparison is of any help): There is some pretty scary stuff going on but it also has the whimsical vibe of YA/middle grade fantasy.
Her Body And Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
