I came across this thread <Link shortened to avoid filters> r/ suggestmeabook/comments/137rdvv/novels_with_irresistible_highconcept_premises/
> I’m a sucker for novels/series that have extremely outlandish premises, especially anything that takes the “what if?” question somewhere bizarre and then honestly explores the consequences of the world that the question sets up.
> One of my favorite examples, a book I fell in love with in high school a very long time ago, is Harry Turtledove’s “The Guns of the South.” Time-travelling racists equip the Confederate army with machine guns. Simple, bizarre, creative, insane, and then fully explored. When I was younger, I was obsessed with Animorphs: kids fight brain-stealing aliens by turning into animals and committing war crimes. A more recent, more mature book that I loved was “A Gentleman in Moscow”: man is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a single hotel. Etc. etc.
and the idea of high concept interests me. They sound super, immediately “grabby”. But I favor mysteries, so I’d like to ask for that genre.
Also would prefer recent books in the past 2 years. Thank you.
