I read the two books mentioned in the title and I need something else less bleak :’(

I’m looking for something along the same lines as those two, but with a hopeful ending!

I like books that deal with the meaning of life, alienation, urban fantasy, mental health, books about books, animal companions, spiritual pilgrimage, discovering your own path and loneliness.

Examples of things I already love – The midnight library, Siddhartha, the cat who saved books, the miniaturist, if cats disappeared from the world, clean sweep, Neverwhere, ocean at the end of the lane & the alchemist

(I’m looking for a stand alone book, not a series)

    1. Catch-22 will be a nice palette cleanser for you! It’s a genius work.

One of my favorite books of all time!

    2. Pretty-Plankton on

Buffalo Gals Won’t You Come Out Tonight by Ursula K LeGuin (the novelette. It’s also the name of a short story collection that it was originally published as part of, which is also excellent)

Always Coming Home by Ursula K LeGuin if you find the premise of it intriguing. It’s an ethnography of a fictional far future culture, and a very unusual novel. It won’t be the right book for every reader but it’s very, very good ;).

I definitely think LeGuin is the author you’re looking for, and that Buffalo Gals would be an excellent way to see if you agree with me on that.
