I’m looking for reads that are basically the book equivalent of Godzilla or King Kong movies… or Jaws (but I’ve read that one :). So basically, an enemy creature (or a few creatures) stalking or otherwise posing danger to a person or community.

To be clear, I’m NOT looking for mythology or classic literature (eg I’m not going to read Moby Dick for example), and I’m not particularly interested in supernatural beings.

It’s great if it’s pretty literary (non fiction is great too) – I really loved the book Close to Shore, for example (about the series of great white shark attacks on the NJ shore in 1916), and I just put the book No Beast So Fierce (about a tiger in India who started hunting humans in 1900) on hold at the library. On that note, while this isn’t strictly necessary, in Close to Shore, I really loved the elements of learning about that place and time in history (it’s actually also a really fascinating look at how ‘going to the shore’ became a pastime for Americans) and it sounds like No Beast So Fierce has that emphasis on historical context as well.

But again, that’s not super necessary – I liked The Meg and I’m also going to check The Sphere by Michael Crichton out as well.

Thanks in advance for any recs!!

No Beast So Fierce is a really good book! I love books about big cats and that one is a goodun for sure. Another one that’s pretty good is The Tiger by John Vaillant. It’s not as action packed and it’s a little slower paced (it focuses a lot on Russia as a whole), but man is it a fascinating story that really gets the blood pumping when talking about this tiger. If memory serves well (it’s been a few years since reading it), this one would set TRAPS for people. Super good stuff. But I’m curious to see what people also say about this one request! I’m a big creature feature guy myself so I’m always up for a good monster yarn!
