(Tried hiding them, but some spoilers for Octavia Butler’s Dawn)
I just read Octavia Butler’s Dawn (I read the second book in the trilogy as well, but that is less relevant), and it made me really want to read something where the protagonist is in a similar “trapped” situation where they’re being conditioned, manipulated, etc. >!except that they are able to escape or at least don’t give up and accept the situation.!<
I enjoyed Dawn for different reasons and the moral questions it poses are really complex and interesting, >!but as I read it, I couldn’t help but hunger for a story that focused more on escape with a more satisfying? ending.!<
Anyways, I’m looking for something more similar to escaping a cult-like society than escaping prison, if that makes sense.
I understand that given the question recommendations will probably have some spoilers for the ending, so don’t worry about that.

Wild seed by Octavia Butler has similar themes but the situation is also impossible to escape but let’s say >!the protagonist gets away from it as much as she can!<
