I want a book with a main character who is like Kaz Brekker in Six of Crows–broken, vicious, whip-smart, and single-minded, but caring in their own way. Emphasis on broken. Healing is ideal, romance is optional. Fantasy is my big genre, but absolutely not necessary. Preferably a series.
I’ve been struggling to read recently, and I tore through Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom in four days. It’s left me wanting more, but the characters the other books follow just don’t pique my interest like Kaz (and Inej and Jesper) did. I want to read something where the main character starts in a horribly broken place and by the end, has at least made the first real steps toward healing.
I like dark and gritty. I like character studies. I like it when books don’t shy away from the darkest parts of humanity without glorifying it. I guess I want the book(s) to traumatize me and then walk me through (at least) the beginnings of healing.
I don’t want Game of Thrones (I’ve already read them) or The Witcher. I don’t want something that comes across as r/menwritingwomen. Smut is fine, bad smut is not (i.e. GoT, The Witcher, etc.).
Other books/series I’ve enjoyed: The Poppy War, Sabriel, Red Sister, Brimstone Angels. I enjoyed the character study aspects of Pillars of the Earth, the r/menwritingwomen aspects, not so much.
