Just finished The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s most definitely going to be one of my favorites of this year.
I realized through reading this and reflecting on some of my other favorite books (The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by VE Schwab and Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young) that I enjoy coming-of-age type stories with complex and flawed (yet still likeable) characters that alternate telling the story between the past as a child/teenager and the present as an adult. I especially enjoy books like this that have an air of mystery or suspense (i.e. the disappearance of Ruthie in the Berry Pickers; the murder of Lily in Spells for Forgetting) This might be very niche though so feel free to throw out any suggestion that has a similar vibe to The Berry Pickers, and I will check it out!
As an added note, I’m actively seeking to diversify the authors I read so bonus points if you have any recs by authors of marginalized communities.
