Hello, I’m looking for books that focus on individuals (ideally two) who have a pretty complex relationship. I understand that a “complex” or “messy” relationship might sound vague, but something along the lines of Connell and Marianne in Normal People (Sally Rooney) and Sadie and Sam in Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (Gabrielle Zevin). Preferably contemporary, but I guess I’m open to all suggestions.

There’s something about the way that these characters are presented that dives into their individual intricacies which may or may not reflect on how their actions. I do enjoy how sometimes these characters (Normal People, especially, since I’m currently reading it) may not be honest to the other, such that there would be a filter between their minds and their words.

There’s also the aspect of romance, but with a lot of tension. These characters are presented to seem like the other’s missing half, but there’s a lot of tension and doubt within themselves that other possibilities could also happen. I’m not exactly looking for a romance book, and >!the characters do not have to end up together!< (I’m not sure if this counts as spoilers for Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, but better safe than sorry I guess), but I do enjoy the chemistry between them–especially the kind of frustration when they’re not really being honest with how they feel and maybe would regret it when the other finds someone else or something along those lines.

Anyway, I’m sort of rambling at this point. Hopefully that gives a decent picture of the kind of novel I’m searching for. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
