I’m looking for books with main characters like Detective Robert Goren from Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Mysteries are preferred but if another genre has a similar character, suggestions are still welcome.
What I like about Goren: He’s equal parts awkward, arrogant, and charming. He can have empathy and then can be a total hard-ass. He can be frustrating with his unusual ways of following the clues and solving the case but there’s always a method to his madness and it’s a joy to see how everything fits together. He’s highly intelligent and also flawed. And probably very lonely. He has an honor code but it doesn’t necessarily match the honor code of the status quo. Bonus points for having an arch-nemesis/foil (as with Nicole Wallace).
