I’ve always been a reader. When I was younger, I pretty much read anything that caught my interest. But the older I’ve gotten, the harder it’s been to branch out of Y/A teen-romance novels, or Y/A in general. Adult has never really appealed to me because the stuff I’ve always been recommended just seemed bland compared to what I currently read.
(**Ex:** Literally spending over $200 for the entire Riordan verse soon, I’ve read books like *We Were Liars* & *Family of Liars*\-**E.Lockhart**, *The Lake*\-**Natasha Preston**, *The Summer I turned Pretty*\-**Jenny Han**, *They Both Die At The End*\-**Adam Silvera**, *The Fault In Our Stars-***John Green**, *Five Feet Apart*\-**Lippincott+Daughtry+Laconis**, I’ve already read things like *Hunger Games*, some true crime stuff, I’ve tried philosophy, etc.)
I’ve been looking into more ‘sophisticated literature’ because I want to work on a new novel but want to read different writing styles first.
I already have some stuff in a wish-list: Little Woman (and Jo’s Boys), Pride & Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, Sugar Birds, A Certain Hunger, The Handmaids Tale, All The Light We Cannot See, etc.
Any ideas of where I should start if those aren’t a good place? I’m a teen-romance writer, but I don’t want my writing to sound like it was made for twelve-year-old’s since I write mostly 16-18. I want more of a punch to it, for lack of better words. Especially since I have a *dark-acamedia-esk* idea I’ve been working out for a few years now but can’t find the right voice for.
