Wanted – novel set in a colonial town at the “fall of the empire”

I’m looking for something set in the British or French empire, in a hot tropical town, at the time of the empire’s collapse. Beautiful architecture, thrilling politics, divided loyalties, forbidden love – that kind of thing. Any recommendations?
